🚨 Community Care Is Failing Where It Matters Most — On the Ground.
Inspired by Rep. Doug Collins‘ recent interview with@SiriusXM’s Julie Mason, I’ve been reflecting on how disjointed outreach, underinvestment in frontline roles, and outdated policy frameworks are weakening our community care infrastructure—especially for veterans and underserved populations.
đź’ˇ First and second-line workers are disappearing.
We’re facing a 25% projected growth in demand for home health and personal care aides by 2031 (BLS), but there simply aren’t enough trained professionals entering the pipeline. These roles—case managers, outreach specialists, intake coordinators—are critical to executing on national initiatives at the local level. Without them, referrals stall. Claims get denied. Communities are left underserved.
🧩 What’s missing? Organizational structure + strategic planning.
In my previous work leading VISO partnerships across the country, I saw firsthand the gaps in local coordination. Great intentions fall flat without centralized standards, measurable outcomes, and adaptive systems. Compounding this are EHR systems still tied to outdated statutes, creating roadblocks that vary by zip code.
❌ Privatization isn’t the answer.
Since the PACT Act passed in 2022, the VA has faced a surge in claims—over 17,400 potentially denied in error just last year (VA OIG, 2023). Offloading these systems to private contractors without systemic reform risks deepening inequities and operational failures.
🤖 But there’s hope: generative AI + standard-aligned reform.
McKinsey estimates up to $1T in annual productivity gains are possible in healthcare with generative AI. Used correctly, AI can fast-track benefits processing, flag gaps, and drive equity—but only if we build agile systems that are constantly “trued up” and held to purpose-driven standards.
📣 Let’s not outsource responsibility. Let’s build better.
To those in health tech, policy, or veteran services—what’s working in your org when it comes to local outreach and infrastructure? I’d love to hear your perspective.
